At 16, while her peers were buried in textbooks or video games, Xu Zhuoyuan from Hunan stood on top of the world.
Her successful summit of Mount Everest at 16 was met with online skepticism, with the core accusation being: "She only made it because of her mountaineer father!"
And she agrees! Her father's support was indeed crucial. It started with him introducing her to high altitudes at age 4, guiding her to summit Siguniang's Second Peak at 12, and having her train with a 20kg pack. She conquered the 7,000-meter Muztagh Ata as the final qualification for Everest. During the final push, despite temporary blindness in one eye and a frozen oxygen tank, she became the first climber to summit that day, witnessing the sunrise.
Now 18, she is pursuing the global "Explorers Grand Slam" (7+2). Moreover, she has inspired her once-opposed mother to take up climbing herself, so she can "see what her daughter sees."
Xu Zhuoyuan's trailblazing journey is not only her own path of exploration but also reflects the evolving perception of outdoor adventure within Chinese families.
