RXZ was launched in the year 1985 globally by Yamaha, mainly in South-East Asian countries. It was debut in India by 1987. RXZ is the much upgraded version of RX135 with disc brakes and 5-speed transmission.

Like in India, it was hugely acclaimed bike among young motorcyclists in Malaysia as well. This was because of their futuristic design and different styling attracted the young generation. The main attraction was the cosmetic outfits of this motorcycle resembles motocross racing kind of styling. Apart from that a 5-speed gearbox and a low resonating exhaust mufflers were other distinctive features of this motorcycle from the alternatives.

It uses a 132cc, air-cooled, 2-stroke engine same as that of RX-135 and RXG. But this model can produce a maximum power of 20 bhp @ 8500 rpm and a peak torque of 12.0 Nm @ 6500 rpm. The 5-speed gearbox uses universal gear shifting pattern. RX-Z can cruise to a top speed of 120 kmph. Front brake uses disc braking, while rear features usual drum brake. Suspension system comprises of telescopic forks at the front and dual shocks with swing arm for the rear.

Fuel tank capacity of this bike is 12 litres and it have a fair amount of fuel efficiency of 40 kmpl. Like all other RX series 2-stroke bikes, this one too has some emission problems. But it used to shine in dirt and off-road races globally. It is even considered as the miniature version of RD-350.
