The Slip-stick mechanism describes the non-uniform rotation of the drillstring that generates low frequency torsional vibrations in the drillstring as the bit repeatedly sticks and slips. These vibrations once initiated become self-sustaining through the response of the rotary drive to the RPM and Torque fluctuations. Slip-stick is initiated when the rotary torque applied to the drillstring is insufficient for smooth
rotation. This increase in torque or resistance to rotation can be generated in a number of different ways. This is as well as possible mitigation attempts will be the subject of this video.
