Pushpanjali and Ulagellam | Bharatanatyam | Arangetram

Pushpanjali and Ulagellam, a floral tribute with folded hands, Nataraja Anjali, is generally the inaugural dance of a Bharatanatyam recital, and is dedicated to the Arangam. The dancers embark on a journey for which they offer their salutations to God. The ending verses are on God Shiva who is presented with brightness of the moon on His head.

Oh Lord (ISA) who protects (kAttiDum) this art form (kalai) of bharatanATyam (bharata) we dance (ADum naTam)! Your (un) feet (padangaL) dance (naTam pODa) at all times/everyday (anudinamum) to the mnemonic syllables jhaNu takiTa tOm tOm, to the accompaniment (kUDa) of the chanting of the sAma vEda and music (isai gAnattuDan), along with (uDan) the lady (mangai), pArvati (SivakAmi)! Please grant (aruLvAi) (us) the boons (varam) we desire (vENDum).

ulagellAm uNarndOdarkkariyavan The one who is attained by (ariyavan) by those that have experienced (uNarndu) the world (ulagellAm) and have earned expertise in the recitation of the vEdAs (Odarkku)!
neelA ulAviya nirmali mEniyan The one with a blemishless (nirmali) complexion (mEniyan) illuminated by (ulAviya) the moon (neelA).
azhagil jOtiyan ambalattADuvAn The cosmic dancer (ambalattADuvAn) whose beauty (azhagil) is like a searing flame (jOtiyan).
malarSilambaDi vAzhti vaNaNguvOm Let us sing his praises (vAzhti) and offer our prayers/bow down at (vaNaNguvOm) at his flower-like (malar) feet (aDi) adorned with anklets (Silambu).
