At 7pm on Wednesday 10th December, the Port Isaac Carols were beautifully held at Truro Cathedral, drawing an excellent attendance and filling the space with festive cheer and community spirit. The service was led with grace and warmth by Reverend Helen Byrne.

The event showcased the remarkable singing heritage of Port Isaac, with brilliant performances from the village’s choirs, including the renowned Fishermen's Friends. A highlight was the involvement of the children from Port Isaac Primary Academy, who began the evening with a captivating lantern parade. Led by a Cornish piper, Merv Davey, the parade lit up the cathedral precincts with handmade willow and tissue lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere that set the tone for the service.

This special service, entitled "A Starry Night," celebrated the unique cultural legacy of Port Isaac’s singing groups — the Port Isaac Chorale, Port Isaac Gulls, Yarny Goats, and the Fishermen’s Friends — each bringing their distinctive character and flavour to the evening.

The event highlighted the village’s history of music and community spirit, from the early days of John Wesley’s visits to the founding of the Port Isaac Ladies Singers by Janet Townsend MBE, whose legacy continues to inspire the current choirs.

Between the carols, attendees were treated to a variety of elements that enriched the experience. These included, interviews with Janet Townsend & Jon Cleave about the fantastic Port Isaac singing traditions; readings by Reece Collins, Helena Arnold, Damien Bolton, and Elizabeth Ellis.

The combined choirs began the evening with a rousing rendition of "Hark the Glad Sound," setting a joyful tone for the service. The Port Isaac Chorale followed with the traditional carols "Hail Sacred Day, Auspicious Morn" and "Realms of Glory," showcasing their rich harmonies and deep connection to Cornwall's musical heritage. The Port Isaac Gulls then enchanted the audience with heartfelt performances of "Love Came Down at Christmas" and "The Little Drummer Boy," their a cappella style bringing a fresh and intimate feel. Port Isaac Primary School contributed with a touching rendition of "Starry Starry Night," adding youthful charm to the proceedings. The Yarny Goats lifted spirits with lively versions of "Hark, Hark" and "Brightly Beams," encouraging audience participation and warmth. The Fishermen's Friends delivered powerful performances of "I Saw Three Ships" and "Cornwall My 'Christmas' Home," a special Christmas-themed adaptation of the Harry Glasson classic, leaving a memorable impression. The Port Isaac Chorale returned to sing the beloved "Sans Day Carol" and "Awake with Joy, Salute the Morn," before the evening culminated in a magnificent crescendo with all choirs joining together for a stirring rendition of "While Shepherds Watched" to the tune of Lyngham.

The success of the evening was the result of extensive planning and dedication by the team from Port Isaac. Their meticulous organisation ensured every detail, from the lantern parade to the choir performances and the smooth running of the service, was executed flawlessly.

The Federation of Old Cornwall Societies plays a vital role in encouraging and safeguarding traditional Cornish carols and singing. Through supporting events like this and working closely with local communities, the Federation helps keep these cherished traditions alive, fostering a sense of identity and continuity across Cornwall.
