Kinderdijk is situated in the Alblasserwaard polder at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers.
To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740.
This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands.

Zaanse Schans is known for its collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses.
From 1961 to 1974 old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek were relocated to the area. The windmills located here were built after 1574.
