The Koshi Project was the first joint venture project of India and Nepal in an international river shared by them. It was presented as a mutually beneficial Multipurpose Scheme to both countries on various accounts. The benefits that would accrue from this development project included flood control, irrigation, and hydropower. An agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Nepal on the Koshi Project was signed at Kathmandu on 25th April 1954.
