Double antimicrobial coverage or therapeutic duplication refers to regimens in which antimicrobial agents with overlapping spectrum are used.
In most instances, double coverage is not needed (such as double anaerobic coverage when 2 agents with adequate anaerobic coverage is employed - e.g. piperacillin/tazobactam and metronidazole).
In this video, I discuss how to assess these therapeutic duplications to optimize your patients' antimicrobial regimen in order to reduce adverse effects, antimicrobial resistance, and cost.
