The Shins celebrated the 21th Anniversary of the band’s debut album, ‘Oh, Inverted World’, playing the record in its entirety. A number of songs from the album have only been played live a few times, if ever. This was the first show of the tour and everybody was excited to see them.

Joseph also joined the band (James Mercer, Jon Sortland, Yuuki Matthews, Patti King, Mark Watrous) on stage for several songs. However, Joseph was “one sister short”, as Allison Closner was not with the band due to appendicitis and actually went into surgery the day before the first show of the tour started. As a result, the other two sisters, Natalie and Meegan, performed as a duo, and asked the fans to send healing vibes towards Allie’s way.

James came out to talk with us after the show, which was very nice. He signed my tour poster and told me that they spontaneously came up with the idea to cover STP during a jam session at practice the other day, which was also why he needed to still reference the lyrics on his phone, lol. One fan asked him to sign one of The Shins’ rare original demo CDs from 1999(!). James joked that he hadn’t seen that in a long time and wondered where he got it. He also told us that he remembered making the CD insert himself, printing the graphics at Kinko’s and cutting the paper to fit it in the CD case, lol.
