Former U.S. Army Ranger and sniper Nicholas Irving revealed in a recent interview that most terrorists he encountered were poor fighters, describing them as “trash fighters” who lacked skill, accuracy, and battlefield tactics. Despite many being highly religious, Irving explained that their combat effectiveness was low, often relying on fatalistic beliefs rather than military discipline. He noted two types of fighters: those allied with U.S. forces against the Taliban, motivated by paychecks, and those who engaged in unpredictable attacks, including “green-on-blue” incidents where Afghan soldiers turned on U.S. troops.
Irving singled out one exception—a legendary Chechen sniper who pinned him and his unit down for hours and whose reputation spanned decades. While this foe demanded great respect, Irving said most terrorists were “easy killing” and lacked the capability to seriously threaten trained soldiers. This insight offers a rare frontline perspective on the realities of combat against terrorist forces in Afghanistan.
