This line was opened in 1863 by the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midland Junction Railway. It was part of the route between London and Manchester passing through the Peak District in Derbyshire.
It closed in 1968, however in 1981 a 8 1/2 mile section re-opened not as a railway, but a bridleway known as the Monsal Trail.
In this first part we have a walk as far as Hassop Station, finding more relics from the railways days than we expected.

Bakewell Station closed in 1967.
Hassop Station closed to passengers in 1942 but the goods yard was in use until 1964.
