Welcome to MatNum 2024 (December, Part 2). This month, as usual, we’re exploring computational photography through my apps, focusing on QR codes that unlock virtual film stocks for your own practice. The first contact sheet was generated with my iOS app, featuring a mix of D Naas and KDC 100n film stocks. Scanning these QR codes imports parameters directly into your apps, producing results like those in the contact sheets. I love how contact sheets showcase the process, including missed shots, making them valuable for archiving and editing.
One example is a backroom photo with intriguing lighting and composition. The plant, door, and shadows create a mysterious atmosphere. Other examples include shots of my feet—one at a bus stop, another exiting a bus—where the virtual film stock enhances composition and subtle details. This preset also works beautifully for landscapes, like the snowy scenes near Grindavík or the frozen rivers of Iceland, where low-contrast areas render with unique textures.
Another set was created using “Crunchy” and “FJ Mini” presets. While I wasn’t thrilled with the overall success rate, the results were interesting. A standout was a performance by artist Clare M., where a pianist is subtly visible, and the stylized treatment amplifies the mood. Additional examples include snowy streets, historical corrugated steel buildings in Reykjavík, and the vibrant textures of Geneva’s train station. These treatments offer a way to stylize mundane scenes into something visually compelling.
I’ve been testing my new iPhone 15 Pro, replacing my trusty iPhone 12 Pro Max. While I’m less impressed with its lenses, the sensor’s capabilities paired with my apps yield compelling results. For example, a bonfire at a New Year’s Eve celebration in Reykjavík was transformed using various filters, from monochromatic tones to fiery, saturated palettes. Each treatment offers a new way to interpret and reframe the original image.
Some filters excel in creating graphic or abstract elements. For instance, shots of frozen rivers or Geneva’s residential streets are reimagined with enhanced textures and tonal range. Even simple landscapes—like near Keflavík International Airport—gain depth and visual interest when processed with these virtual film stocks. Filters like “Kiki BL QQ” or “Bomber Baba” lend a unique touch to these images, making them stand out.
For social events, I’ve found treatments that elevate casual shots, like DJ sets or nightlife scenes. Reworking such images with contrasty or colorful filters turns them into striking visual narratives, capturing the energy and mood of the evening.
In summary, these QR codes offer a toolbox for creative exploration, allowing you to transform flat, mundane images into something unique. Whether you prefer subtle tweaks or bold, stylized changes, these virtual film stocks can elevate your photography. Feedback, questions, and suggestions are always welcome. I hope you find inspiration in these examples and enjoy experimenting with the QR codes. Catch you next time!
