At first listen it feels easy to play, but the ear gets fooled the moment the groove starts—you immediately lose track of the one. The bass plays on the offbeats, while the clavinet chords (with that unmistakable wah-wah) land on the downbeats, creating the illusion that everything is reversed. Miss that detail for even a moment and the whole feel can fall apart.
Written by Stevie Wonder, this track became one of Rufus’s biggest hits and helped launch Chaka Khan into stardom. Her powerful, soulful voice earned her the nickname “The Queen of Funk.”
Rufus was a key force in the 1970s funk and soul scene—tight grooves, sophisticated harmony, and deep pocket playing that still teach us lessons today. Simple on the surface, but full of traps and hidden treasures underneath.
I left the bass part out of the verse so I wouldn’t mess things up… and I’m honestly surprised I remembered almost the entire song. A quick review and I’m ready to go—along with all the usual mistakes. Now I just need my old wah-wah pedal, which must be hiding somewhere in the garage.
I’ll end by hoping the title brings us some good news for 2026—because the world right now feels a lot like the opening of this song: confusing, off-balance, and hard to place. But with a little attention, things can still fall into the right groove.
