In this episode, we stumble across a wonderful little free camp nestled in the heart of Northern Queensland, where we base ourselves for some exploring around the region. Unfortunately, the Queensland weather had other ideas! However, we still managed to catch some fish, go prospecting for sapphires, and enjoy slowing down after a crazy last few months. From there, we headed to the Undara Lava Tubes.
The Undara Lava Tubes started their formation almost 200,000 years ago when volcanic activity in the region was much more common. As lava flowed from the Undara Volcano, it moved rapidly through the surrounding landscape, creating vast lava channels. As the top outer layer of the lava flow cooled, it solidified while the molten core continued to flow through the insulated interior. Once the eruption subsided and the lava drained away, it left behind a series of hollow tubes. The Undara tubes are some of the longest and best-preserved in the world, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's violent volcanic past.
Such a great place to tick off the list and offered some fantastic home schooling opportunities at the same time!
