BBC Radio's 2006 production of "The Willows" is a gripping adaptation of Algernon Blackwood's classic supernatural horror story, a tale that H.P. Lovecraft himself considered one of the finest in the English language.

The story follows two friends, a first-person narrator and his companion, a Swede, on a canoe trip down the Danube River. They decide to camp overnight on a small island in a remote, wild stretch of the river, an area dominated by an endless expanse of whispering willow bushes. They are drawn to this desolate spot by a feeling of sublime beauty, but their initial awe quickly turns to unease as strange and unsettling events begin to occur.

They see bizarre apparitions, hear a mysterious gong-like sound from the sky, and their camp is subtly tampered with. The Swede, initially pragmatic, becomes increasingly convinced that they have trespassed into a "thin place" between worlds—a location where the laws of nature are suspended and an alien, malevolent presence resides within the willows. The two men find themselves under a psychological siege, with the landscape itself seeming to be a conscious, hostile entity. The climax of the story involves one of the men being targeted for a "sacrifice" to this unseen power. They ultimately manage to escape, but not without discovering a horrifying truth about the forces that inhabit this strange, willow-filled land. The radio play masterfully uses sound and a palpable sense of isolation to create a deeply unsettling atmosphere of cosmic dread and psychological horror.
