English Shorthand for beginners | Shorthand Chapter 5 Diphthongs | Grammalogues

In this video, the chapter-5 which is Diphthongs from the Pitman Shorthand instructor book has been explained in detail. Here, we would learn about what is diphthong and the types of diphthongs. Basically, a diphthong is the one which has two vowel sounds in one syllable. There are four diphthongs which are I, OI, OW and U. Each of the diphthong has their sign to be represented. Here, I and OI are the first place diphthongs which means they should be placed on the first place of a stroke. Also, OW and U are the third place diphthongs which means that they have to be placed on the third place of the stroke. Diphthongs are so much easier to understand than the vowels chapter from earlier since in vowels we would have to learn about dark and light vowels. But, in the case of diphthongs there is only light diphthongs. So, all the diphthong signs have be LIGHT.

Joined Diphthong:

Then comes the joined diphthong where we learn how to write strokes and the diphthong signs in joined way with examples.

Triphones:

Triphones are the ones where a vowel sound comes along with a diphthong sound. A triphone is represented by a small tick attached with the diphthong sign. This has been explained with examples.

Abbreviated W:

In this, W can be represented by a small right semi circle under a condition. The condition is when W comes before K, G, M, R it should be represented by a right semi circle.

But when a vowel comes preceeding the W, then the usual way stroke must be written inspite of the above condition.

Few set of grammalogues have also been explained.
