Västervik is one of Sweden's great holiday gems and, among other things, known for its beautiful city center and fishing harbour, its connection with Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA and his floating hotel, and the Västervik Resort - one of Sweden's largest camping facilities. The city is also known for the beautiful nature, including he unbeatable archipelago with 5,000 islands and the hinterland with the Småland forest and lakes.
The first place with the name Västervik was located in the innermost part of Gamlebyviken, where Gamleby is now. In 1275, Västervik is mentioned as a city and was moved to its current location in 1433. Then Sweden's King Erik of Pomerania asked the citizens of Västervik to settle closer to the sea, under the protection of Stegeholm Castle.
In 1517 the Danes ravaged Västervik. After this, the city benefited from Gustav Vasa, who had a shipyard built. The city stayed out of the Dacke feud which was appreciated by Gustav Vasa, who spared the city from the harsh concessions that affected the rest of Småland after the war. Despite further Danish ravages in 1612 and 1677, the city prospered with growing exports. Among other things, iron from the mills in Tjust and sawn timber. During the period of freedom, several manufactories and a new shipyard were built, and the bourgeoisie was subsequently strongly impressed by the flourishing mill and manor culture in Tjust.
The construction of the railway to Hultsfred, Norsholm and Vimmerby in 1879-1906 brought increased activity and population. The railways were built narrow-gauge, which in the long run became inhibiting. The city became a seat of the labor movement, and during the final stages of the First World War in 1917-1918, workers' councils were formed which were taking over control of the entire city. Shipyards, paper mills, fishing, nail factory, stone quarries, match factory, mechanical workshops, etc. became the base for the city's industry.
