Join me and my brother as we travel back to São Miguel, Azores to join in on the 500th year anniversary celebrations of the Romaria. Covered in shawls and colorful scarves around their necks, carrying wood staffs in one hand and rosaries in the other, a group of Romeiros from the village of Vila Franca do Campo originated on October 22nd, 1522. Romeiros is a tradition that dates back to the 16th century on Sao Miguel, an island in the Azores — 900 miles off the coast of Portugal — where a massive earthquake rocked the city of Vila Franca do Campo, causing landslides, death and devastation. The Romeiros come from all around the world. They walk the island roads for eight days during the months of February and March during Lent. They travel clockwise on the island in groups by the dozens, from dawn to dusk praying for all mankind.
