According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, Buckingham Palace confirmed the King “will not travel to the Vatican” due to “protocol and precedence which dictates that the Sovereign does not attend funerals”.

Instead, Prince William will attend the service on behalf of the British Royal Family.

According to Vanity Fair, this isn’t the first time an heir has gone in place of the monarch, as Charles attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005 instead of Queen Elizabeth.
