One of Rachmaninoff's most famous and beloved works, written when he was just 19 years old straight out of conservatory. The story goes that Rachmaninoff composed the prelude based on a dream he had in which he was walking through a church yard, hearing the bells toll, when he saw a funeral procession in the distance. Upon getting closer and looking in the coffin, he came face to face with himself, which caused immense terror and panic, which you can hear as the music cascades down in hectic triads till it collides with the original theme.
