Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters gathered at the Orient Theatre in East London for a night vigil ahead of Julius Malema’s pre-sentencing hearing at the East London Magistrate’s Court.
Malema was convicted on multiple firearms-related charges stemming from a 2018 EFF rally at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, where he was seen firing a firearm into the air. The charges include unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment.
As Malema prepares to return to court on Friday, opinions remain sharply divided. The EFF maintains the case is politically motivated, while lobby group AfriForum insists that a custodial sentence is necessary to uphold the rule of law.
Legal experts say the court will weigh aggravating and mitigating factors, including Malema’s personal circumstances, the seriousness of the offences, and the message sent to society. The outcome could carry major political consequences, including the potential loss of Malema’s parliamentary seat if a sentence exceeding 12 months is imposed.
