Kim Goss recently published an article arguing that kettlebell training has major problems and that the barbell is superior. The article can be found here: https://startingstrength.com/article/...
Kim’s thought process leans heavily on barbell-centric thinking, was published on Mark Rippetoe’s “Starting Strength” website, and cites Charles Poliquin — among others — to argue that kettlebells are overrated, outdated, or only useful for niche athletes.
In this video, I break down the article section by section and explain why this argument against kettlebell training falls apart once you look beyond swings and beginner level assumptions.
We cover kettlebell training in depth, including strength endurance, GPP after 40, clean and jerk, snatch, presses, grinds, ballistics, joint health, tendon health, cost comparisons, learning curves, injury claims, and why kettlebells are fundamentally misunderstood by many barbell focused coaches.
I explain why using Mark Rippetoe as an authority against kettlebells is a weak starting point, why Charles Poliquin’s dislike of kettlebells does not invalidate the tool, and why dismissing kettlebell training based on poor study design or limited application misses the bigger picture.
This is not a barbell versus kettlebell debate. Barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells are all valuable tools. The real issue is adaptation. Kettlebells excel at strength endurance, work capacity, and general physical preparedness, especially for people over 40 who are not chasing one rep maxes but want to get strong, lean, pain free, and resilient.
If you are searching for kettlebell training, kettlebell workouts, kettlebells vs barbells, kettlebell strength, kettlebell GPP, kettlebell clean and jerk, kettlebell snatch, or evidence based kettlebell training, this video will give you context that is usually missing from the conversation.
