I’m making progress with the challenge I set myself to use Foil Drive with a parawing to do long distance upwind-downwind runs. Today I did over 20km, roughly 10 km upwind and the same on the downwind run back to the start point. This is a distance ratio of 1:1 which I’m super stoked about. The time it took was a bit longer on the upwind stage, I think it was 55 minutes upwind and 40 minutes for the downwind run - BUT, the wind direction today meant I could do one huge upwind run without any turns. With a wind direction that means you have to zig-zag upwind by gybing multiple times will increase the time it takes to go upwind. Having said that I really don’t mind if it takes longer because I enjoy the technicality of the upwind parawing stage. For me it’s as much a part of the fun and the challenge as the downwind run itself. Another bonus is for anyone who struggles to find people available for shuttle runs at the same time as them, or for those who simple want to spend 100% of their session time on foil rather than 50% of it in a car, this is rapidly looking like a viable solution.
As far as I can tell there’s no negative points for using Foil Drive with parawings. In this session Foil Drive let me get to the wind line (2km offshore), it ensured I got on foil even when the wind was too light for the 5.5m D-Wing, and it’s the perfect back up safety system for going long distances. It’s fair to say that I couldn’t have done this run without Foil Drive. This is such an exciting time to be part of foiling🤙
