Sapphire & Steel - When TV was unafraid to be strange

Sapphire & Steel is one of the strangest and most intellectually unsettling series ever broadcast on British television. Created by P.J. Hammond for ATV, it presents two enigmatic operatives — Sapphire (Joanna Lumley) and Steel (David McCallum) — who are summoned to deal with “breaches in Time”.

Time, in this universe, is not a neutral backdrop. It is hostile, unstable, and capable of manifesting through objects, spaces, and routines. Children’s rhymes, abandoned railway stations, empty houses, and half-forgotten rituals become points of entry where Time intrudes into the present.

The series offers no comforting exposition. Sapphire and Steel are not explained, their employers are never identified, and the rules they operate under are only partially revealed. They are calm, detached, and emotionally distant — observers and enforcers rather than heroes. Human lives are collateral; survival is not guaranteed.

Produced almost entirely on videotape, with minimal sets and a tiny cast, the programme turns its technical limitations into strengths. Silence, repetition, and stillness are used as weapons. Threats are rarely seen, often only implied, and sometimes never resolved. Several stories end without victory, closure, or escape.

Across six assignments, Sapphire & Steel dismantles the idea that television drama must reassure or explain. It replaces narrative comfort with atmosphere, dread, and uncertainty — and trusts the audience to endure it.
