For decades, the road network on Mombasa’s western mainland struggled under the weight of East Africa’s busiest trade and transport hub. Traffic gridlock, poor road safety, and economic slowness became daily realities for the county’s 1.2 million residents.
But that has been changing. With $58.75 million invested with funding from the Government of the UK and Denmark, in partnership with the Government of Kenya, the County Government of Mombasa, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), and TradeMark Africa, the Mombasa West Integrated Urban Roads Network saw the upgrades to major routes, namely, Magongo, Port Reitz, Kipevu and Mbaraki-Nyerere Roads, that are transforming connectivity to the port, the airport, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and beyond.
Now, cargo moves faster, traders operate more efficiently, local businesses are growing and communities, once choked by dust and risk, are breathing easier. This is what regional trade infrastructure transformation can do when it is designed for lasting socio-economic impact.
