Before the advent of Islam in the 7th century, Arab society was largely tribal, nomadic, and decentralized, with a culture deeply rooted in oral poetry, honor, and kinship. This period, often referred to as Jāhiliyyah (the "Age of Ignorance"), was not entirely void of moral or cultural value, but it was marked by tribal rivalries, vendettas, and a lack of unified political or religious structure. The Arabian Peninsula was home to various religious beliefs, including polytheism, with the Kaaba in Mecca serving as a central shrine housing idols, as well as Christian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian communities. Economically, Arabs engaged in trade, herding, and raiding, with cities like Mecca and Yathrib (later Medina) serving as important commercial hubs.
