Getting divorced? Here are some things that you should do. There's a long list of these and I'm sure I'm not going to be able to cover all of these today, but I do want to hit on a few for you.

First of all, the do's. If you're planning to get divorced, one of the things that you can start doing is clean out your closet. This sounds simple enough but in a relationship, you collect a lot of things that remind you of your spouse. You don't necessarily want these things hanging around or reminding you every single day of your relationship that's ending. Pack these things away and decide what you want to do with them. If you have children, maybe you want to keep some things for your children for later. It doesn't mean they have to sit on the mantle anymore.

The second thing that you might want to do is to start spending some quality time with your children. One benefit of this is you get the time with your kids. The second benefit is it's very good if you have a custody case. Maybe you found that you worked a lot in the past few years, and maybe that was one of the problems with your marriage to begin with. Now is the time to really spend some quality time with your children. Go to sporting events. Take them to get ice cream in the afternoon. Make sure you're showing up and that you're spending time there.

The third thing is organize your finances. Divorce is hard on finances. There's no way around it. When you're splitting what you accumulated between two people, it's going to be less for both. Now's the time to start doing things, like get a credit report, open your own bank account without your spouse's name on it. If you haven't had credit in the past, now's the time to get a credit card because it's going to be a lot harder once you're divorced, particularly if your spouse is the higher income earner in the family.

The fourth thing you can do is make forgiveness a priority. It's so hard when you're going through a divorce to keep your priorities straight, and forgiving someone is really difficult. Now, I know your spouse may be the worst person in the world right now, but if you have children, you're going to be stuck dealing with that person for the next several years. This is the time to start letting go.
