COVID-19 and racial inequities are unfortunate realities of our time that can lead to student trauma. This REL Southwest webinar, “Addressing Collective Trauma and Supporting the Well-Being of Students and School Staff Webinar, Working through Cultural Trauma” was recorded on January 21, 2021. The webinar archive includes five videos: (1) an introduction to the webinar by Lacy Wood, (2) an overview of collective and cultural trauma, with recent examples, by Drs. Wehmah Jones and Tammie Causey-Konaté, (3) an explanation of a four-step model for addressing cultural trauma with Drs. Tammie Causey-Konaté and Robyn Madison-Harris, and a discussion with Dr. Marcus Jackson about his experience with cultural trauma as an educator in Louisiana, (4) a conversation about integrating trauma-sensitive approaches and social and emotional learning to create safe, supportive, and culturally responsive schools with Kathleen Guarino, Dr. Wehmah Jones, and Terrence Pruitt, and (5) closing information.
In Video 2, Drs. Wehmah Jones and Tammie Causey-Konaté define cultural and collective trauma, discuss how COVID-19 has challenged beliefs and may be a trigger for trauma, and provide examples of collective trauma in U.S. education.
