Tamangs were historically the predominant settlers who settled around the Kathmandu valley and as far as the Tibetan plateau to the North. As the political scenario changed in Nepal, they were forced to migrate o the hills of Darjeeling, Terai parts of West Bengal and Sikkim. Their ethnic identity is marked with their culture and religious traditions that they practice and believe. Tamangs move in groups and their unity is an important component of their identity, which they use to mark themselves different from the other tribes. Tamangs emotionally associate themselves with a musical instrument called the Damphu. Their religious practices are guided by the doctrines of Buddhism, yet their pre-Buddhist Shamanistic practices of worshipping nature are still visible even today. Bagpa Dance narrates a story when Buddhism was entering the land of Tibet through the belief structure of the common masses. This fragment of a religious performance takes us to a tour to the journey of viewing the formation of Tibetan history.
