The Buddha’s Visit to His Hometown
The Buddha returned to his hometown after seven years. His son, Rahula, was also seven years old and had never seen his father before. It was the first time Rahula saw him, now dressed as a monk instead of a prince.
Imagine a son meeting his father for the first time after seven years! Imagine a faithful wife waiting patiently all that time, just to see her husband succeed in his spiritual journey. Those moments were both emotional and inspiring.
Princess Yasodhara was one of the most beautiful and educated women of her time. The Buddha, in his youth, was also highly educated and skilled — a well-trained prince who later became a wise ascetic. In his teachings, he discussed many religious and philosophical ideas, such as in the Brahmajāla Sutta, where he described 62 different views that he encouraged his followers to go beyond.
He was deeply learned in both royal arts and spiritual knowledge. No one dared to debate against him.
When the Buddha visited his hometown, Yasodhara already knew he had given up worldly pleasures to follow a spiritual path. She fully accepted his decision and supported his quest for enlightenment. At that time, she recited "Narasiha Gatha" the Lion among men is one of the most beautiful poetic songs in Buddhist literature, describing the Buddha’s noble appearance and introducing him to their son Rahula as his father.
It is said that all the Sakyans went to meet the Buddha except Yasodhara. Then, the Buddha himself went to see her and expressed how grateful he was to have had her as his life partner — not only in this life but in previous ones too.
He then shared the Canda Kinnara Jātaka, a story about love, loyalty, and honesty between two devoted beings. Someday, I will write a song based on that Jātaka and share it with you all — those love stories are truly beautiful and moving.
The Buddha and Yasodhara had been performing good deeds together for countless lifetimes. In every life where they met as husband and wife, they supported each other’s spiritual journey. Even in their final life, they helped one another reach enlightenment and freedom from worldly suffering.
Having a good partner in life is truly important — it brings happiness, strength, and success.
