Released in 1971, "Vincent" was composed by Don McClean, who was greatly moved by the life and art of Vincent van Gogh, a post-impressionist artist, and paid tribute. McClean is said to have been deeply inspired to make the song after reading Van Gogh's biography "Lust for Life," which illustrates how Gogh experienced loneliness without being recognized by the world. In particular, he got a lot of inspiration from Van Gogh's masterpiece, The Starry Night, which was mentioned directly in the first line of the song.
Numerous artists have covered the song, and versions such as Josh Groban, Rick Astley, and Ellie Goulding are famous.
