The email arrived at three in the morning. I was awake because sleep had become optional after Linda passed. The laptop glowed in the kitchen, and I watched the notification appear with the subject line: "Trust Distribution Complete." I opened it. The attachment showed a transfer authorization bearing my signature, dated two weeks prior, directing the entirety of my parents' estate into an account I had never opened.
I had not signed anything.
The signature looked correct. The notary seal looked legitimate. But I had been in Seattle that day, burying my wife's ashes in the sound where she wanted them scattered, and I had not touched a pen for anything except the condolence cards I could not finish writing.
Someone had moved four million dollars using my identity, and the only people with access to the trust documents were my brother and sister.
