Topology is one of the most important branches of modern mathematics. It captures that part of geometry which is preserved by (bi)continuous maps.This is the first video in a short course on point set topology. We introduce the fundamental notion of a topological space which provides the language for topology and in particular, gives the correct way to formulate the notion of continuity. We motivate the otherwise abstract definition by showing how it naturally generalises the notion of continuity in metric spaces.
