FRANK ZAPPA/BERKELEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - “The Son of Serious Music” full album

Frank Zappa's great love for the music of Edgar Varèse, Igor Stravinsky and Anton Webern had always been a vivid source of inspiration throughout his career as a rocker. Zappa had already experimented with orchestral music in small or "low budget" orchestras (as in Lumpy Gravy and 200 Motels), but he did not conceive them as real "serious music". Between one concert and another, he began to write music different from what he put in his rock albums: true orchestral music, with symphonic scores that required years and years of feverish, tireless work. The conductor Kent Nagano expressed interest in Zappa's scores, which Pierre Boulez had told him about, so he got in touch with Zappa asking him for some scores to look at for a possible performance. Obviously Zappa, who couldn't wait to have them performed, after a few weeks called Nagano to inform him that he had the London Symphony Orchestra available and asked Kent if he would be willing to conduct it.
An official album was produced, “London Symphony Orchestra”- vol. I, published in June 1983 (the second volume was published in June 1987). Three unofficial “Serious Music” records (the first of which is already on this YouTube channel) performed by the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra also circulated during that period. Il grande amore di Frank Zappa per la musica di Edgar Varèse, Igor Stravinsky e Anton Webern era sempre stato una vivida fonte d’ispirazione anche lungo la sua carriera di rocker. Zappa aveva già sperimentato la musica orchestrale in piccole o “low budget” orchestre (come in Lumpy Gravy e 200 Motels), ma non le concepì come "serious music" vera e propria. Tra un concerto e l’altro, prese a scrivere musica diversa da quella che metteva nei suoi album rock: vera musica orchestrale, con partiture sinfoniche che richiesero anni e anni di febbrile, instancabile lavoro. Il direttore d’orchestra Kent Nagano manifestò interesse per le partiture di Zappa, di cui gli aveva parlato Pierre Boulez, così si mise in contatto con Zappa chiedendogli degli spartiti da guardare per una possibile esecuzione. Ovviamente Zappa, che non vedeva l’ora di farli eseguire, dopo alcune settimane chiamò Nagano per informarlo che aveva avuto la disponibilità della London Symphony Orchestra e chiese a Kent se fosse stato disposto a dirigerla.
Fu prodotto un album ufficiale, “London Symphony Orchestra”- vol. I, pubblicato nel giugno del 1983 ( il secondo volume fu pubblicato nel giugno del 1987). In quel periodo circolarono anche tre dischi non ufficiali di “Serious Music” (il primo dei quali è già su questo canale YouTube) eseguiti dalla Berkeley Symphony Orchestra.
