A recording of a lecture presented by Emeritus Professor John Melville-Jones to celebrate the first 100 years of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Western Australia. (8th October 2013)
"Classics and Ancient History has been a part of UWA since its foundation, and over the years the world's most isolated Classics department has produced a rich harvest of scholarship and eccentricity. A part of this enterprise for more than half its life, Emeritus Professor John Melville-Jones will give an informative and entertaining account of it, based on his own recollections and on original research. Hear about the Professor who never arrived to take up his appointment, about another Professor who became the global authority on the ancient world's most dynamic figure, and about the first stirrings of democracy amongst junior staff in those distant times when Professors were seen as divinely appointed, if not as divine themselves. As Classics and Ancient History moves into its second century here, bolstered by record undergraduate numbers, we invite you to celebrate with us its distinctive contribution to academic life at UWA and general cultural life in Western Australia."
