This is our first video, and moving forward!
Long ago, a group of Phoenician merchants landed their ships on the sandy shores near Sarepta (modern-day Sarafand, Lebanon). They stopped there to rest, cook, and eat — essentially, to have what we’d now call a beach picnic or party.
They built a fire on the beach to cook their meal.
But — as the legend goes — they had no stones to rest their cooking pots on, so they took blocks of natron (a type of mineral soda ash they carried as cargo).
When the natron mixed with the sand under the intense heat of the fire, it melted together and formed a shiny, translucent material.
That was — according to legend — the first accidental discovery of transparent glass.
