I thought I was done with these Home Alone games, but I guess deep down I was thirsty for more. Having rediscovered Home Alone 2 Lost In New York on Sega a few years back (having not played it in over 20 yrs) I was wondering how the first Home Alone game on Sega would stack up. Would be better than the NES/SNES Home Alone games? Would be just as good as Home Alone 2 on Sega? For some reason, this game had totally flown under my radar for years. I never even knew it existed. I have never played, found it when out hunting for games in town or my local area etc (kinda like the situation with the original Batman game on Sega as well...never knew that one existed either at the time). I was well aware of the Nintendo Home Alone games on NES and SNES and of course Home Alone 2 on Sega. But what about this one? I will totally admit that I was very intrigued when I discovered that there was indeed a Home Alone 1 on Sega Genesis and that it was NOT a straight-forward platformer. The fact that the game relies heavily on strategy and building weapons to deal out damage on Harry and Marv I knew that I got to try and find this game and give it a spin. Well having not been able to find it I turned to emulators. I gave it a spin once a few years back and I had no idea how to play it effectively and efficiently. My initial impression of it at the time was okay this seems to be a very decent game, but its gonna certainly require some practice and home work to understand how to play it. So I did not play it again until very recently. Spent a couple afternoons with it and quickly came to learn how to play it. And after figuring out all the weapon combos (wrote down every single combo that I could find) and how to most effectively damage and punish the Wet Bandits, the game became a lot of fun very quickly. I loved the look of the game. It captures the Xmas feel and the feel of the movie to a decent degree. The controls are tight and responsive, the gameplay featuring 6 different houses to booby trap and defend was also a great inclusion instead of having just the one house. The music is catchy and suits the game well. And thankfully the challenge was JUST right. Tough enough where you have to be on your toes, but fair enough that it doesn't get overly frustrating either. Certainly not an endurance of pain like Home Alone 2 on SNES/NES and not stupidly easy like Home Alone 1 on SNES. It was just right for my tastes. But the real highlight for me was the placing of iconic traps in all the houses to stop the Wet Bandits and of course the weapon building system. Master that system and you will do well at the game. But you really can't miss many shots either...like at all or you won't have enough ammo to finish off Harry and Marv and therefore you'll "lose the house" and you can't get the perfect ending. On Easy mode you can lose 2 houses and get a good ending, but on Expert mode you can't lose a single house, and Harry and Marv's van moves twice as fast and their patterns of looting houses is totally random each time. But even things out a bit you do get access to I believe 3 more weapons to build and use in Expert mode that are not available in Easy mode. They are by far, the most powerful weapons in the game. Overall its a very fun and balanced early 90's licensed game. And arguably the best Home Alone game by a long shot. I did finally manage to score myself an actual copy of it and it arrived in the mail last week, so I will be playing again for sure before the holidays are over. I would highly recommend tis game to anyone who likes the movies or anyone who has tired of the other Home Alone games that are available. Its not too expensive for a loose or even a boxed copy, I hope everyone that watches has a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks for watching!
Hope you enjoy!
