The Rolling Stones American Tour 1972 stopped in San Diego. Fans camped out all night to get the best seats in The San Diego International Sports Arena.
CBS 8’s Gene Gleeson asked them why they were there so early. One man arrived at 11pm the night before. “Is it worth it?” “It’s very worth it.” “Why?” “It’s the Rolling Stones—I’ve never seen them in my life, and this may be the last time so I’m here.”
How wrong he was! Next—a guy who arrived at 7pm the night before. “What have you been doing all this time?” “Gettin’ stoned.” A gal said he saw them at Altamont and didn’t get to see enough of them. The last young lady he asked arrived at 10 am that day because she wanted to get good seats. It was first come, first served—festival seating.
Seems like a really bad idea but that’s how it was done back then. It was a great month for concerts at the arena--see sign--Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull on the bill.
There was violence that night outside of the arena sparked by fake tickets that were distributed. We do not have film of the show in our archive. It’s likely cameras were not allowed inside. We do have film of the troubles outside and may digitize it in the future.
