R. Shaefer Heard Campground on the West Point Lake, in Georgia, was our first Core of Engineers (COE) campground (though we have been full time RV travelers for over 2 years)- we were thrilled – though we were only able to stay 2 nights. Camping right on the water, watching the sunset was exactly what I have been looking forward to when we started traveling full time in our Grand Design fifth wheel camper over 2 years ago. Natural campground on the water in Georgia.

In this video, we will show you every site, as well as the amenities – like the bathhouse & dump station – as well as the day use.

Pros: Large campground (117 sites); roomy sites; most with water access; power/water; dump station; beautiful sunsets (our site #79);good roads; boat ramps x 2; hot showers; hiking trails; pet friendly; double/buddy sites; fire pit; large day use; price $30 a night

Cons: some sites have steep/narrow grade back in (but marked on website); noisy on water on weekends; many sites have no privacy greenery; no sewer hookup; bugs (long legged spiders & lake midges?); some site pics on the website are not accurate

“R. Shaefer Heard Campground is a waterfront facility on the southern shore of West Point Lake [extends 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River], which spans parts of Alabama and Georgia. This man-made lake has 525 miles of shoreline that provide excellent opportunities for fishing, camping, boating and other recreational activities.

Campsites 67-72,74, 77-78, 91 and 92 have wooden decks. Tents are not allowed on these campsites as there is no graveled impact area available; campground is forested and overlooks the 25,900-acre lake

CHECK-IN TIME is guaranteed for reservations after 4:00 p.m. CHECK-OUT TIME is 3:00 p.m.
GATES are locked from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and will only be opened in emergencies. For emergency exit, see the park attendant contractors at their campsite located near the gatehouse or call 706-645-2404

R Shaefer Heard Day Use Park, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is located on the southern end of West Point Lake, near R. Shaefer Heard Campground. This park offers a variety of recreational opportunities such as hiking/biking trails, boat launching, picnic sites and good access for bank fishing.
