சென்னையை சேர்ந்த நூரி அம்மா, 13 வயதிலேயே தான் திருநங்கையாகப் போராடத் தொடங்கி, வீட்டிலிருந்து வெளியேறி பாலியல் தொழிலில் ஈடுபட்டு எச் ஐ வியால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டார். இந்தியாலில் எச் ஐ வியால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட மூன்றாவது நபர் இவர். தன்னைப் போன்ற ஒதுக்கப்படும் சமுதாயத்தினரை அரவணைக்கும் நோக்குடன் SIP மெமோரியல் அறக்கட்டளையை ஆரம்பித்து பலரின் வாழ்க்கையை மாற்றியது மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஒட்டுமொத்த சமுதாயத்தை உயர்த்தும் நோக்குடன் பல முயற்சிகளை எடுத்து அதில் வெற்றியடைந்தும் உள்ளார். இக்காணொளியில் தான் கடந்து வந்த பாதையைப் பகிர்கின்றார்.

Noori Saleem is battling two of society’s greatest stigmas — being a transgender and having HIV. At 24, she was diagnosed with HIV, the third person to be officially declared, in 1987.

She decided to start the South Indian Positive Network for giving advice, information, and any other services for persons who are HIV positive. For her remarkable services, she has received so many awards from the Government of Tamil Nadu including the Life Time Achievement Award. Born in Chennai, and orphaned at a very young age, Noori has been taking care of herself since the age of 13. She ran away from her house, unable to deal with the gender-identity crisis. Working as a sex worker, she quit when she was tested HIV positive, and wished to help others like her.

Today, she runs a shelter, SIP Memorial Trust, for orphaned and abandoned children who had HIV positive parents. She has traveled to over 26 countries like Canada, Japan, Australia, and Thailand as a public speaker on AIDS-related issues.
