----INTERVIEW WITH PATRICK----
How did you get involved with An Evening with Champions?
PL: When I was in high school, I always had my sight set on the University of Texas at Austin. In senior year, when it came time to apply to colleges, I heard about An Evening with Champions. That was the year that Yu-Na Kim skated, and I knew that I just had to be a part of the organization because it combined my interests in service and figure skating. So, I secretly sent an application to Harvard without even telling my parents. That year was the first year that Harvard reinstated Early Action, so I found out that I had been accepted in December. At that point, I had already been accepted to UT Austin, and I knew I had a choice to make. Before freshman year even started, I had asked about EWC at Visitas, the visiting weekend for accepted students. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of EWC, and it's been an incredible opportunity to be one of the Co-Chairs this year.
How has An Evening with Champions shaped your college careers?
PL: As a former competitive skater, EWC was really formative in that I found out I could combine my interest in figure skating with service and leadership. Being skater liaison allowed me the opportunity to reach out to my skating idols, which was always really nervewracking and exciting.
Becoming Co-Chair allowed me to learn very deeply about each position and each task that goes into planning such a huge event. I now know what it means to go 150% into something, and being Co-Chair has been the more rewarding extracurricular experience I've had at college thus far. From managing board members to solving crises, I have learned so much about how to motivate a team, how to develop each member's potential, and how to speak with a variety of people professionally.
What are your responsibilities to the show (make this part more exciting and more relevant to our cause/mission)
PL: The Co-Chairs manage the board and make sure that we are on track at all times, and if we aren't, how to get back on track. We speak directly with sponsors, the Eliot House administration, the Harvard Athletic Department, and The Jimmy Fund. There is so much that goes into being a Co-Chair, and it's been an invaluable experience for me.
