Materials and media of nature: Media-ecological approaches in times of ecological crises using the example of Global Forest Watch, Birgit Schneider (Universität Potsdam, Institut der Künste und Medien)

The talk discusses the current research field of media ecology in its variety of perspectives on media and ecology or media and environment. It brings together media concepts associated with these perspectives. The starting point of this field of research, which has been burgeoning since the 2010s, is the ecological question in times of climate catastrophe and species extinction, which also arises for image and media studies. After all, media are also part of material cycles and thus linked to the ecological crisis. At the centre of the talk is the separation between the symbolic and the material, between what the media represent and the material conditions that, beyond technical artefacts, are the conditions of possibility for all representations. In my talk I will argue with many examples, and with the case study of the globalforestwatch.com platform taking centre stage, i.e. the question of how the destruction of global forests can be combated by means of forest monitoring using satellites and networked maps.

Birgit Schneider is a scholar of media culture and visual studies with a strong interest in environmental humanities. She is professor of knowledge cultures and media environments at the University of Potsdam, Institute for Art and Media. Her research focuses on technical and scientific images, with a strong emphasis on questions of media aesthetics and media archaeology, the visual communication of climate since 1800 between science, aesthetics, and politics.
