In this video, I talk about inappropriate laughing in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, a behavior that can be confusing or distressing for caregivers. I explain that this type of laughter often serves a function, such as sensory stimulation, communication difficulties, attention-seeking, or even an unintended learned response. To help manage this behavior, I share five key strategies: teaching replacement behaviors, using differential reinforcement, reducing triggers with structure and visual supports, addressing sensory-seeking behaviors, and helping children recognize and regulate their emotions. By understanding the function of the laughter and reinforcing positive alternatives, we can support children in navigating social situations more appropriately.
