The Pharping Hydropower Project, located 12 kilometers south of Kathmandu, Nepal, was inaugurated by King Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah on May 22, 1911. It is considered the first hydropower project in Nepal and the second in South Asia. The project was built by Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher JB Rana and was initially named after him: Chandra Jyoti. It took four years to commission the project, with an estimated cost of Rs 713,273 at the time. The project generated 500 kilowatts of electricity by channeling water stored from local sources in Satmule and Sesh Narayan through a 200-meter high dam. The power produced was mostly used to light houses and palaces of the elite Rana families.
