The global development model has assumed that industries would move from expensive labor countries to cheaper labor countries. But the imminent transformation of many industries by robotics and artificial intelligence will make domestic production cheaper in the global North than outsourcing production to the global South. Cheaper goods from automated industries in the North will also threaten the growth of less automated African industries. Africa will need to develop more endogenous economic development models.
