StarCraft is a real-time strategy computer game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment on March 31, 1998. It is the first game in the StarCraft series and is set in a distant part of the galaxy known as the Koprulu Sector. The game introduced players to three distinct and balanced factions—the human Terrans, the insectoid Zerg, and the psionic Protoss—each with their own unique playstyles, units, and storylines.
StarCraft is often considered one of the most influential strategy games of all time and played a pivotal role in the rise of professional esports. In South Korea, the game became a national phenomenon, broadcast on television, played in packed arenas, and taught in military academies. It is often jokingly referred to as South Korea’s fourth official sport, after baseball, taekwondo, and soccer.
The story follows escalating tensions and full-scale warfare between the three factions, touching on themes of betrayal, sacrifice, and galactic conquest. The narrative continues through the Brood War expansion, released later in 1998, which added new missions, units, and dramatically expanded the lore of the StarCraft universe.
StarCraft was praised for its deep strategy, engaging story, and perfectly balanced asymmetrical factions. It sold over 11 million copies worldwide and won multiple Game of the Year awards.
A shareware version of the game allowed players to try out limited single-player and multiplayer modes. In 2017, Blizzard released StarCraft: Remastered, updating the original with modern graphics and matchmaking while preserving the gameplay that made it legendary.
