Car antennas have a helical wire wrapped around them. For some this doesn't help AT ALL with picking up a signal so what is it for? As it turns out the reason these are present are the same reason the Burj Khalifa spirals and that smokestacks have fins. To reduce oscillation and flutter.
These helical coils act as Helical or Scruton Strakes and will reduce noise and oscillations you'll get at speed in your car.
