How Good Was Deandre Jordan Actually? Was he the worst all NBA player of all time?
There was a point in NBA history where the center position was kind of in a rough spot, but it was also during that point when Deandre Jordan rose to become one of the best centers in the NBA.
Today, fans see him as the guy who gets thrown into the game to put a big body on opposing centers, grab rebounds, and block a few shots. But there was a point in time when Jordan was an elite center in the NBA and a centerpiece for one of the most exciting eras in Los Angeles Clippers history. Still, you’d probably wonder how an unskilled big man became an All-Star in the NBA. So, let’s look at just how good Deandre Jordan was.
In the early 2010s, the NBA went through a weird transition that allowed the game to become more perimeter-oriented while ditching the traditional center position. At that time, the best center in the NBA was Dwight Howard, and not a lot of big men were close to him in terms of his athleticism and inside presence. But as Howard became more irrelevant while the league moved on to an era powered by guards, traditional centers lost their place.
They became more of shot blockers, rebounders, and opportunistic inside scorers. A huge center named Deandre Jordan happened to fit what the league was looking for in a center at that time.
Since his high school days, Jordan was already an anomaly as a center. As a senior, he averaged a near triple-double in points, rebounds, and blocks because of how his athleticism complemented his size and wingspan. There weren’t a lot of athletes standing 6’11” that had the explosive hops that Jordan had. He completely dominated the prep ranks because no one could match up with his physical abilities.
Jordan entered college as one of the top high school prospects after finishing his senior year, averaging 26.1 points, 15.2 rebounds, and 8.1 blocks. But as great as he was in high school, his physical abilities didn’t exactly translate into college. He averaged subpar numbers of 7.9 points and 6 rebounds during his freshman year at Texas A&M. He was as raw as any center could get, and it was clear that he lacked skill. But while he could’ve honed some of his post moves and fundamentals in college, Jordan moved on to the NBA draft.
