Skating on Craiglockhart Pond (Edinburgh) on Saturday 13/02/2021. SAFETY WARNING especially for anyone not used to natural ice: don't even consider venturing out onto the ice unless you have carefully considered recent local weather conditions (solidly subzero for 4-5 days at least) and gauged the thickness of the ice (~5cm absolute bare minimum to carry a single adult of average weight), as well as any potential underwater drains or inlets. Treat any change in appearance of ice surface with suspicion, and never pass underneath bridges as the ice is much weaker. Skating in this video was done carrying a special ice safety tool around the neck ready to use which floats and consists of two grips that come apart to reveal small spikes that allow you to pull yourself up back onto the ice in what should be a very unlikely event of falling through, as well as with a towel and spare change of warm clothes carried in a watertight drybag.
