Alirio Diaz plays Lauro's Guitar Concerto with Simon Bolivar Orchestra Felipe Izcaray 1980

As a tribute to the great Venezuelan Titan of the Guitar, the late Alirio Diaz (1924-2016), here is the only studio recording he made of the Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra (1956) by Maestro Antonio Lauro (1917-1986), and that I had the honour of conducting. We did this in May 1980 in Sala Jose Felix Ribas, with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, a vinil LP private edition sponsored by INOS (National Institute for Water and Sanitation), and produced by Mariangelina Celis y Asociados. This was after concerts in Caracas (Aula Magna UCV and Chancellery) and Lauro’s native city, Ciudad Bolivar. My friend and fellow Carora native Alirio was at his best, and the orchestra responded with energy, passion and precision to the concerto’s nuances. Maestro Lauro had high praises for the results of this collaboration. Side B of the LP contains Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

Como un tributo a la memoria del gran titán venezolano de la guitarra, Alirio Diaz (1924-2016), he aquí la única grabación que él hizo en estudio del Concierto para Guitarra y Orquesta (1956) del Maestro Antonio Lauro (1917-1986), en la que tuve el honor de ser el Director. Realizamos esto en Mayo de 1980 en la Sala José Felix Ribas, con la Orquesta de la Juventud Venezolana Simón Bolívar, en un disco LP de vinilo patrocinado por el INOS (Instituto nacional de Obra Sanitarias) en una producción de Mariangelina Celis y Asociados. Esto se grabó luego de conciertos en el Aula Magna de la UCV, la Cancillería y el la ciudad natal de Lauro, Ciudad Bolívar. Mi querido amigo y paisano caroreño Alirio estaba en su tope artístico, y la orquesta respondió con energía, pasión y precisión a los matices del concerto. En el lado B del LP está el Concierto de Aranjuez de Rodrigo.
